In your professional life, what is the single best thing about what you do?
I get to sing and play guitar! This is a daily need for me so it’s great that I can share it with people and get paid for it!
Do you have a creative hero / heroine and if so, why?
I admire so many creative people for all the different things they bring to art. Joni Mitchell is pretty high on my heroine list. She’s original, clever, beautiful, poetic, lyrical. She bears her soul in her music and it is so inspiring to feel such strong raw creativity.
What piece of advice do you wish you had been given at the beginning of your career?
Probably obvious but, whatever you do, make sure you do something you love, regardless of status, money, direction. It’s easy to be seduced by these things at the beginning. Experience has taught me that the process is just as important as the outcome, so you’ve got enjoy it for what it is, and not what it might bring.
If you hit a creative block, what is your top tip for getting through it?
To do something anyway. If I’m struggling with ideas I make myself come up with something, even if I don’t like it and it’s rubbish! Usually something good comes out, or it becomes the building blocks of something really interesting.
And finally, for fun, if you were a shoe, what type of shoe would you be and why?
A petite dainty shoe, with a high heel but firmly grounded and comfortable! Not sure that such a shoe exists?
