I met Tommy Darker recently when I saw him speak at a conference. I was extremely impressed with his ideas, his knowledge and his attitude. Describing himself as a 'musicpreneur', Tommy is a musician, a music industry thinker and founder of Darker Music Talks. He has spoken at high level music events worldwide and there is a wealth of material on his website. He also runs Darker Music Talks, with the next one in London on 7th May. These are free events to support musicians to become musicpreneurs, bringing them together with music industry entrepreneurs, label owners and promoters.
In your professional life, what is the single best thing about what you do?
Every day I'm doing what I really love - music - and it doesn't feel like 'work'. Through this lens, any 'problem' becomes a 'cool challenge'. And cool challenges are fun!
Do you have a creative hero / heroine and if so, why?
Not really. There are many people I do admire. However, I love observing other people and taking lessons from these observations. Every person has a different lesson to teach. In general, I don't believe in heros/heroines. No, actually I do: every single person is a hero.
What piece of advice do you wish you had been given at the beginning of your career?
Whether you stress or not, you will get all shit (aka tasks) done. When you have the choice, opt in NOT to stress.
If you hit a creative block, what is your top tip for getting through it?
Usually I don't hit a creative block. But when I get stuck, I take a walk and a little voice recorder with me. Then I start talking to myself. About anything. It always generates new ideas - musical or entrepreneurial.
And finally, for fun, if you were a shoe, what type of shoe would you be and why?
I love this question - shoe aficionado here! For sure a pair of slim, burgundy oxfords. I love this colour and oxfords is what I wear almost every day. I must have been a shoe in my previous life :)
