The “I Am…” Alphabet Game

Sometimes we all need a little boost, something to remind ourselves what we can do/who we are.  However, we might not feel entirely comfortable sitting down listing all the things we are great at, or the pleasing personality traits we possess.

I have a game I play sometimes with clients who need a little bit of confidence building. Even with very modest clients, it relaxes them. And like many things which are seemingly fun and frivolous, you can uncover little nuggets of gold during the process.

The game is simply to go through the alphabet in sequence and for each letter, find a word to describe yourself. Like all games, there are rules:

  • You must go through the list as quickly as possible, giving yourself as little time as possible to think and debate with yourself. Perhaps time yourself, say, no more than two minutes.
  • All the words must be positive.
  • You must preface every word with "I am”, for example:

  • I am amazing
  • I am brilliant
  • I am courageous
  • I am direct
  • I am exciting

And so on.

This speed (and often laughter that accompanies it), generates energy and the "I am" creates a positive attitude.

In a coaching session, we often go back to some of the words used and work on these. However, it is a game you can play on your own, perhaps whilst sitting on a bus on the way to a meeting you are nervous about. It gives you a boost and can help distract you from your nerves.

Try it out today – and let me know what you come up with for X and Z!

If this has struck a chord with you and you want to find out if coaching will support you, check out how we could work together and get in touch.
