Creating a Confidence List

We can all have moments when the Inner Critic is being particularly noisy or Imposter Syndrome rears its’ ugly head.

To help counter this, one technique is to create a list of 10 things which make you feel confident. Then when you feel the doubts hit, you can check through your list and pick one thing to do to get back on track. (Or if it is a really shaky day, make your way through all 10!)

Because this list would be very personal to you and what motivates you, it is difficult to prescribe what “should” be on it. Some examples of what clients have come up with include:

  • keep a file of testimonials / thank you cards to read through
  • repeat an affirmation
  • wear a kick ass red lipstick
  • adopt a power pose
  • revisit a piece of work / project of which you are proud
  • remind yourself of another area where you are confident and “transfer” that confidence to where you are stuck
  • put on your favourite outfit
  • do a secret act of kindness for someone else
  • check posture - stand up tall
  • smile
  • complete a small task to get a “quick win”
  • dance to a favourite track
  • sing along to a favourite song
  • call a friend - be interested in them and take the focus off yourself
  • put on your lucky knickers!
  • visualise - see yourself at your best
  • listen to “your” song (mine is Waterloo Sunset)
  • “have a quiet word with myself”!

It doesn’t matter how deep or lightweight the action is - all that matters is that it works for you.
