My Very First EBook!

Demystifying the Business Planning Process ebook from Deborah Henry-Pollard of Catching Fireworks for creative practitionersI have just uploaded my first e-book, “Demystifying the Business Planning Process”.

The book is a version of a workshop which came about through my work with clients and through meeting and talking to people at business networking events.  All of them are intelligent, capable people whose can manage their creative practices perfectly well, but some still go a bit wobbly when faced with “business”.  I can understand this because when I started out, my biggest fear was doing my tax, because there was all this jargon and it seemed just plain scary.  I went along to a workshop organised by Businesslink run by a very nice taxman and once I had got into it, it was a lot less difficult than I had anticipated.  For other people, their blind spot may be “marketing”, “business planning” or “risk analysis” which is blocking putting plans on paper.

If you are already in business and thinking that all this isn’t such a big deal, imagine doing something you haven’t done before, like going into a betting shop to place a bet.  Do you know what ante post betting is, how to judge a horse’s form, what “the going” is or what “3 places 1/5 odds” mean?  I have no idea and frankly, I wouldn’t want to walk into a betting shop without knowing, not only because I might look foolish, but also because I might get blinded with even more unintelligible information.  However, if I really wanted to place a bet, I would search the net or find a book to help me get the basics before trotting off to my local betting shop.

My ebook is not an in depth business planning book – some of those are listed in the Resources section at the back of the book.  It is a primer, a stepping stone to give you a bit of confidence by introducing business concepts.  It will help you to see if there are any skills you need to develop, but within the context that the skills and qualities you use everyday are the same ones which you need to get started in making your creative practice more organised.   I hope you enjoy the book and please pass it on to anyone else who might be interested in it.
